Orvieto is characterized by a unique charm that always captures the traveler. Isolated atop a spur of tufa, Orvieto and this cliff have always been one and the same. Needing no defensive walls, the city developed
freely within. But the restrictions imposed by the very nature of the rock meant that as time passed the city also grew upon itself, one phase on top of the other. History, art, culture and farming all evolved together in
fascinating and harmonious ways where roads climb between the hills and valleys along the shores of the Tiber. For over 2500 years this ancient wine territory, home to the Etruscans and Romans, has been characterized by the colorful presence of grapes arranged in neat rows within the
suggestive surrounding landscape. In term of wines the Orvieto DOC and Orvieto Classico DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) are reserved exclusively for white wines. The wines are the result of a combination of Procanico (known as Trebbiano Toscano) Grechetto, Verdello and Drupeggio grapes in different blend depending on wine producers.
